Cora paced back and forth in front of the bed in her hotel room, the pages and photos from the case file spread out on the bed. She folded her arms over her chest and kept pacing. Her mind raced as she looked at the information she’d collected to that point and tried to make sense of it all. But none of it made any sense. And no matter how many times she read over her notes and looked at the crime scene photos, it wasn’t bringing her any closer to understanding.

Deep down, she didn’t truly believe Nolan had killed Grace Cole. Yes, he’d been drunk. And yes, he’d been out of control when he assaulted her. He’d vastly overreacted to Grace’s attack on her. It was a chaotic scene, and Grace had drawn blood; but it was superficial, and Cora was able to take care of herself. And if she’d gotten into real trouble that she couldn’t get out of, she had faith that Highsmith would have stepped in and pulled her out of it. She hadn’t needed Nolan to jump in the way he had. And she certainly hadn’t needed him to physically assault Grace the way he had.

Nolan had been out of control. And as she thought back to that chaotic scene, she remembered the dull, almost vacant look in his eyes. She’d never seen him be that out of control of his faculties before. Although she’d never seen him flat-out drunk before, she had seen him tipsy a time or two. And in those rare times she’d seen him tip a few back, Cora had never seen him come close to approaching the state he’d been in on the street last night.

What was troubling her the most was the lack of blood evidence. For a scene as savage as Grace Cole’s, she would have expected his clothes to be saturated with blood. But when she’d found him, the only stains on his clothing that she saw were from his own vomit. She’d had Highsmith bag them and send them out to be processed anyway, but she didn’t expect there to be any blood evidence on them. That was likely going to be a dead end.

Nolan didn’t fancy a lot of variety in his clothing choices. Gray slacks and white shirts made up an inordinate percentage of his wardrobe. She’d asked him about it once, and she recalled that he told her it saved time because he didn’t have to pick out something to wear. If most everything was the same, he could simply grab and go. So, on the off chance he’d come back to the hotel to change into a different gray pants/white shirt combo after killing Grace, Cora had searched Nolan’s hotel room, looking for any bloody clothing, and had come up empty.

The possibility remained, of course, that he’d come back, changed, and then disposed of his bloody clothing somewhere else. But Cora didn’t think it was a very realistic scenario. He’d been pretty
